Hepcidin: an important iron metabolism regulator in chronic kidney disease.

چکیده
Anemia is a common complication and its impact on morbimortality in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) is well known. The discovery of hepcidin and its functions has contributed to a better understanding of iron metabolism disorders in CKD anemia. Hepcidin is a peptide mainly produced by hepatocytes and, through a connection with ferroportin, it regulates iron absorption in the duodenum and its release of stock cells. High hepcidin concentrations described in patients with CKD, especially in more advanced stages are attributed to decreased renal excretion and increased production. The elevation of hepcidin has been associated with infection, inflammation, atherosclerosis, insulin resistance and oxidative stress. Some strategies were tested to reduce the effects of hepcidin in patients with CKD, however more studies are necessary to assess the impact of its modulation in the management of anemia in this population.

Hepcidin: an important new regulator of iron homeostasis.
Summary Hepcidin is an important and recently discovered regulator of iron homeostasis. There is strong evidence in support of an important role for hepcidin dysregulation in the pathogenesis of iron overload disorders, and possibly in the aetiology of the anaemia of chronic disease. Further research is needed into the physiology of hepcidin to elucidate the relative contributions of the liver ...
متن کاملThe role of hepcidin in iron metabolism.
Hepcidin is the central regulator of systemic iron homeostasis. Dysregulation of hepcidin production results in a variety of iron disorders. Hepcidin deficiency is the cause of iron overload in hereditary hemochromatosis, iron-loading anemias, and hepatitis C. Hepcidin excess is associated with anemia of inflammation, chronic kidney disease and iron-refractory iron deficiency anemia. Diagnostic...
متن کاملHepcidin: another culprit for complications in patients with chronic kidney disease?
Hepcidin has been established as a central regulator of iron metabolism. In most patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), serum hepcidin levels are relatively high, favoring iron sequestration in several cell types and organs and thereby leading to iron-related complications. In the absence of overt inflammation, serum hepcidin has been found to be most closely associated with serum ferritin...
متن کاملSerum hepcidin-25 levels in patients with chronic kidney disease are independent of glomerular filtration rate.
BACKGROUND Hepcidin is a key regulator of iron homeostasis and levels are elevated in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Hepcidin may explain the often observed imbalance in iron metabolism in patients with CKD. We evaluated the influence of estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) on serum levels of hepcidin-25 and its isoforms in patients with renal dysfunction. METHODS Serum le...

Maintaining the correct iron balance is crucial for health. Our understanding of the molecular control of iron metabolism has increased dramatically over the past 5 years due to the discovery of hepcidin. This is a circulating antimicrobial peptide mainly synthesized in the liver, which has been recently proposed as a factor regulating the uptake of dietary iron and its mobilization from macrop...
